How to Get Faster Internet for Gaming

If you’re a regular reader of Modern Guy then you’ll know that we’re partial to the odd spot of online gaming. But, if you’re anything like us, you probably get incredibly frustrated when everything starts to slow down… So, what can be done? Are there any ways you can get faster internet for gaming? The Modern Guy team takes a look.

Why does the internet slow down during gaming?

In order to figure out some ways to get faster internet whilst gaming, we decided to first look at exactly why the internet slows down.

Having looked at the issue, there are a number of reasons why your internet is slowing down when you’re gaming:

  • Lack of bandwidth – your internet connection is struggling to transfer enough data.
  • Latency – your broadband provider may not offer very good latency, which determines the reaction between when you press a button or key, and what happens on the screen.
  • Network interference – when other devices interrupt your connection to the internet.
  • Multiple users – if you have multiple people gaming on a single internet connection, this can cause everything to slow down.

As you can see, there are a number of reasons (some more avoidable than others), why your internet can slow down during a gaming session.

How to increase your internet speed for gaming

So, what’s the solution? Well, the Modern Guy team has solutions which we’ve detailed below.

Check your internet speed and bandwidth

We know this sounds like a rather obvious point, but it pays to check your internet speed and bandwidth.

Whilst you don’t necessarily need enterprise-level full fibre broadband to enjoy a smooth online gaming experience, you do need at least 15-20Mbps.

However, there is something of a caveat to that last point. Even with 15-20Mbps of bandwidth, if you live in a house where other people will also be using the internet simultaneously – especially for activities like streaming or video chatting – then things are bound to slow down.

If you’re truly passionate about achieving a fast, smooth online gaming experience, then we’d recommend upgrading to a broadband package that offers higher bandwidth.

Double check your latency

As other people have pointed out, latency is particularly important for achieving a smooth, fast online gaming experience.

For those of you not familiar with it, latency (which is also called ping) refers to the amount of time it takes between the push of a button to what happens on screen.

As you can imagine, in competitive online games such as first person shooters, latency can make the difference between winning and losing.

Ideally, you’ll want the latency of your broadband to be below 20ms for the very best gaming experience.

Use an Ethernet cable!

Sure, WiFi is convenient and allows you to game whilst you lounge about with your gaming laptop, but if you’re serious about achieving the best online gaming experience, it’s not going to cut the mustard.

By connecting your computer or laptop directly to your router using an Ethernet cable, you’ll be stabilising your connection to the router, reducing the chances of interference disrupting your game play.

Close background programs and websites

Certain websites such as YouTube and Odyssey can absolutely hog bandwidth. So, turn them off!

Having certain programs open whilst you’re trying to game can also slow things down, so remember to shut those down too!

Restart your router

Can you remember the last time you turned off your router? If you can’t, then it can be worthwhile turning it off and back on again.

Whilst restarting your router isn’t a complete panacea for speeding up slow internet, it does help to refresh your internet connection and improve latency.

Buy a new router

If your router has been in use for a number of years, you may benefit from buying a new one.

In fact these days, it’s possible to buy routers that are specifically designed for gaming. They usually allow enhanced optimisation, allow users to fine tweak settings such as Quality of Service (QoS), which allows you to prioritise internet traffic to enhance your gaming.

Upgrade your internet package

As we mentioned earlier, if you’re truly passionate about achieving the fastest, smoothest, high-performance online gaming experience, then the quickest and easiest way of doing this is to upgrade your broadband package.

If you are going to do this, don’t simply look at bandwidth and upload/download speeds, but be sure to check latency too.

Conclusion

We hope you’ve found our guide to speeding up your internet for gaming useful.
