Five Romantic Destinations for a Hiking Holiday

There’s something undeniably romantic about heading out into the wild together and looking out to a spring flora, a river and some vineyards. Hiking isn’t often first thought of as being a vibe for a date, but it absolutely can be, and so to can camping together in a remote area. This one-on-one time, hand-in-hand, can explore not just picturesque spaces but also indulge in different cuisine, history and unique activities. So with that in mind, here are five romantic hiking destinations.

Malta and Gozo

The Maltese islands have many great hiking trails. Within the selection at Orbis Ways, the trail between Malta and Gozo covers 37 miles across 8 days, meaning it’s a slow and leisurely walk, and it takes you through rocky coastal paths with views of the Med and stops at historic villages.

You’ll see the baroque beauty of Valletta and wander through the walled city of Mdina. There’s a chance to take a ferry to the small island of Comino, where the famous Blue Lagoon has a perfect romantic swimming spot.

Portugal’s Douro Valley

Portugal’s Douro Valley has one of Europe’s most romantic hiking experiences. It’s a stunning river landscape with world-renowned wine culture. Again, Orbis Ways organises this 8-day trail for you, covering only 29 miles, so it’s very short distances each day. The UNESCO World Heritage wine region is great for couples that love wine and dining, though you can walk through terraced vineyards and get a lesson in wine.

The trail actually includes wine tastings at local quintas and visits to many quaint villages like Provesende. It has a magical boat cruise along the Douro River, which is the cherry on top of your stay.

Ireland’s Kerry Way

Ireland’s Kerry Way is a lot more intense at around 139 miles of spectacular hiking. It goes through County Kerry’s dramatic landscapes over a 10 day period, though if this is too much, you can stay extra days at your favourite hotels to extend it to two weeks.

It’s Ireland at its most romantic, from the shores of lakes to some big hills. You’ll see Killarney National Park, past the famous Ring of Kerry, and tread along the ancient paths once used by pilgrims. This is a great one for history lovers and those who romanticise Irish villages.

Cinque Terre, Italy

The Cinque Terre’s network of trails is famous for connecting the five colourful coastal villages, all of which are classically romantic. Couples will enjoy fresh seafood, local wines, and gelato while winding through the narrow medieval streets and relaxing on small beaches between hiking sections. It’s all coastal, so it’s one big holiday vibe, and there will be lots of wine and dining throughout, making it the perfect mix of adventuring and comfort indulgence.

The Dolomites, Italy

Italy has another, very different side to it, which is in the Dolomites. This is one of the best options for those looking for mountain hiking and have a good fitness level. The region does have its gentle valley walks, but it’s difficult to turn down the peak ascents because of the joint effort and reward you will share. The romance really sets in during the comfortable mountain hut stays, calm alpine lakes like Lago di Braies, and, of course, the excellent food.

The destination you choose will be down to what fits the romantic ideals that you and your partner share. But, one thing is for certain, and it’s that the outdoors is often much more romantic than staying poolside in a busy resort or rushing around chaotic tourist attractions in large cities.

Until next time.
